How to Import Your Data to Create a New Table

Learn with our instructional guide how to import your data to create a new table.

00:01: In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to show you how to import your data file into your Knack app to create your first table. 00:14: Once you have created your Knack app and you have been directed to the Builder, you will find a button to add your first table. For this tutorial, we will be using this button to create a "Companies" table and import company names from a .CSV file. For the purpose to keep this tutorial simple and quick, we are using an import file with only one column. To learn how to update existing records or learn more about Mapping Fields during the import process, see our "Importing Records" support article. 00:49: For this tutorial, we will be adding our first table to the Knack app by importing a file. You will see this option selected by default. 01:01: Next, we need to select a file or we can also drag and drop a file here. Clicking here to upload will allow you to select a file from your computer. 01:15: After selecting the file, you will be directed to define headers. This step allows you to choose whether or not the first row of your imported file is a column header. For this example, we will be selecting "Yes" since our first row is the header name. If you select "No", the text of your first row in your file will be changed to a default name and the original text will not be used to define the field names in the next step. 01:45: Select the "Next" button to move forward in the importing process. 01:53: This next step in the import process allows you to configure the field type for each column header in your file. A new field will be created in your table for each column. If you uncheck the box of a column header, a new field will not be created for that column and the data within that column will not be imported. As you can see here, the imported file contains a column header of "Company Name". For this example, it makes sense to have a short text field created for these company names. If we wished to change the field type, we could do so by selecting the drop-down field under "New Field". 02:32: Select the "Next" button to move forward in the importing process. 02:41: In this step, you can name your table anything you would like to. For this example, the table will be named "Companies". By default, Knack will input the name of the file that was imported. 02:57: The final step in this tutorial is to select "Start Import". Selecting this button will begin the import task. If you would like to go back and edit any selections in previous steps before starting the import, you can do so here as well. 03:16: Once you have started the import, you will be directed to the Records view of your newly created table. At the bottom, you will find a progress bar that allows you to see the status of your import. Here, there is an option to cancel your import if needed. 03:34: This guide covered the steps on how to import your data file to create your first table in your Knack app. If you have been following along with these steps, congrats on your successful data import and thank you for watching!
